 Off to The Netherlands!

We’re off to the Netherlands this week!

I have been commissioned by the Doe Museum in Zuidlaren to create a growing series of live sand paintings starting Friday May 22nd to June 1st and then on view until October 30th. The sand paintings will be preserved for approximately 5 months in a dedicated gallery space of over 1000 square feet! This will be a massive installation! Please come and see these paintings if you live in the Netherlands or happen to be visiting. It will be an extravaganza! The sand paintings will grow throughout as they are created on a daily basis by me.

Kickstarter Update!
I would like to start off by thanking each and every backer of the successful kickstarter project in December. With your support this past winter I have been expanding in a new direction by creating a series of permanent sand paintings and other media created in the studio!

After the initial few weeks of working hard to fulfill a large percentage of the rewards, I put my head down and have been immersed in the studio. I am still working on creating the magic carpet reward for those of you who chose this option. Please read further for more about the magic carpet rewards*. It’s been an exciting change of pace, exploration and process of redefining an art form that has mostly been an ephemeral art for me. I’m happy to say that it’s been very productive and that I’ve completed 7 paintings of the 12 that is my goal for this project. With art being an unpredictable animal, some of the paintings have taken longer than expected to complete. Many are highly intricate! I’m fully committed to putting on the show as planned, though will need to project this to a later date this year as opposed to my original estimate of June. I will be in the Netherlands this May and early June, so my work in the studio will be delayed during this period. I will be
intensely creating a series of sand paintings at the Doe Museum in Zuidlaren. Rather than rush the show in New York I felt it best to postpone it. I will keep you posted!
For those of you who follow my social media pages, you may have noticed that I was in San Antonio, Texas, this May. I was there to fulfill a “Have Sand Will Travel” Reward that was sponsored by the Nicholson Family. Through their sponsorship I created a sand painting at the University Presbyterian Church and a second painting at Freight Gallery in San Antonio. Thanks to the Nicholsons and those San Antonio who contributed space to share my work there! The San Antonio Express News covered the story on May 11th.

Here is a little taste of the two paintings I created in San Antonio!

*MAGIC CARPET REWARDS:

With traveling and making plans for more I have not yet sent out any of the rewards titled, “The Magic Carpet”. I had the idea to include all of these pieces in the exhibit of my new painting before dispersing them around the globe as artifacts and pieces of a larger puzzle. To be able to photograph these works together just this once I think adds significant value to those who chose this reward level. So please bear with me, I promise to deliver after the exhibit in New York.

I hope the delay is not an inconvenience to you. If you have any questions or concerns whatsoever please feel free to contact me at joemangrum@joemangrum.com

Most other rewards have now been fulfilled with the exception of a few whom I may not have received an address or there is missing information of some kind. I will address any and all remaining rewards upon my return from the Netherlands shortly after June 11th.
