Art Society of Kingston Spotlight Exhibit

Our Spotlight Solo Artist for the month of September 2022 is New York sand painter and installation artist Joe Mangrum. He will present an exhibition of permanent sand paintings on canvas and wood. This exhibit includes exciting original paintings, utilizing Mangrum’s signature technique of binding colored sand on canvas and carved-relief wood panels. Mangrum’s work combines a rich library of cultural patterns fusing symbols from nature, science and technology in spontaneous abstract compositions. There will also be an ephemeral sand painting installed on the gallery floor. Having completed over 1200 ephemeral dynamic sand paintings in public spaces, audiences have been engaged with his work in New York and around the globe. A graduate of School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Mangrum’s work has been featured in The Museum of Art and Design in NYC, MOCA in North Miami, de Young Museum in San Francisco, Doe Museum in The Netherlands, Sunshine Museum in Beijing, Asia Society in NYC, and at Flag Art Foundation in NYC. He is also a recipient of the Lorenzo Di Medici award in new media at the Florence Biennale. For more about his work visit: www.joemangrum.com
